Relais Knitware began in a small studio in New York in 1984. Susan Melizan was born in Trinidad and is the talented knitwear designer behind the brand. She started the Company designing intricate knit sweaters and accessories seamlessly blending classic appeal with modern shape and comfort.
When Susan first began, the knits were loomed by hand and produced in a cramped Tribeca workspace and shipped in recycled Canal Street boxes. In addition, Susan prides herself on having the majority of her production done in the United States. Hence, she enjoys working with third generation local knitters who share her commitment to innovation and craftsmanship.
Relais Knitware discovers inspiration from details such as:
- Delicate appliques
- Chunky handknits
- Whisper-thin fine gauge jerseys
- Colorful patterns
Each season, Susan carefully plans and produces an eternal quality of a well made sweater. She prides herself on her designs being influential, trendy, classic, and timeless. Also Susan produces quality knits that will last forever. Susan was inspired with her Spring and Summer designs by trends in denim, the sixties vibe, lace, and bright color stripes. Featured below for the 1960’s inspiration you will see embroidered details in lose knits, bright-colored poncho’s as well as bright colored stripes shown in peasant styles – this fits in with the bohemian trend (see my prior post).
Designer Interview
In the first place, I had the opportunity to speak with Susan in great length about the fashion industry and her thoughts about the changes.
(Lynne) How has the Fashion Industry changed over the years? (Susan) Store Owner/Buyers took chances on innovative small lines. The sweater market was much larger in domestic production. We were a more consumer driven society so there was room for all of us.
(Lynne)What have been the biggest challenges for you as a Designer? (Susan) As a small Designer – I multi task: juggling design, production, financials, and customer needs all at the same time.
(Lynne)What do you like about being a Designer in knitwear? (Susan) For me – this is a quick creative flexible medium – I often feel like I “paint” and “sculpt” in yarn.
(Lynne)What do you dislike about being a Designer/Owner? (Susan) I dislike the strict time frame each season. Though lately, it is going away as the seasons go through their own changes. I dislike stores that don’t pay their invoices.
(Lynne)Do you have any favorite moments to share? (Susan) I love watching people walk by me on the street wearing one of my sweaters. Furthermore, I was once in the Victoria and Albert Museum in England and I watched an elegant woman heading in my direction – She was wearing one of my sweaters. Also, I love it when the colors and patterns work together to produce a beautiful piece of fabric.
Conclusion
Moreover, I had the pleasure of working with Susan for the last ten years while running my prior Wholesale Sales Office for the New England Territory and more recently in consulting and running Home Sweater Parties (see my prior posts).
Relais Knitware is classic, beautiful, eternal, and never quite lets you in on its age. Find a sweater that speaks to you from her fabulous collection. Of course, Relais Knitware will open up a world of fun and color for you.
