2024 Red Sox Trade News

So, the 2024 Red Sox trade news is here. Of course, acquiring a player can add a spark to a team trying to make the postseason.

2024 Red Sox Trade News

When the season started; I expected the team to finish in last place again. Check out my 2024 Red Sox Season Opens Today post to learn about this year’s team and my prediction. But, I was wrong. This year’s team has surprised me.

In the first place, Craig Breslow has been proactive. Of course, this is a nice change after last year, Chaim Bloom didn’t do anything worth noting to improve the team.

Furthermore, Andrew Bailey has been instrumental with the pitching staff. With his experience as a pitcher; I am sure Red Sox Nation will see great things come from the team’s pitching staff.

Trade Deadline Time

In the past, the MLB’s trade deadline has usually been on July 31st at 4:00 p.m.

But in 2022, the date was August 2nd at 6:00 p.m.

With the new collective bargaining agreement; MLB is flexible on the date and hour. So, the date can change yearly.

2024 Red Sox Trade Transaction

In the last several days, the following are some of the transactions the team has made.

  • They acquired starting pitcher, James Paxton from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Moises Boliver.
  • They acquired catcher, Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays. They gave up Cutter Crawford, Eddinson Paulino, and Giberto Bautista.

In addition, the team designated Reese McGuire and Chase Anderson for assignment.

  • Also, they traded Nick Yorke to the Pittsburgh Pirates for right-handed pitcher, Quinn Priester.

Though Priester was pitching in the majors with Pittsburgh; they are sending him to Triple-A in Worcester Also, Priester has a 5-pitch arsenal and has a minor league option in 2025 which makes him more valuable

On the 30th, Craig Breslow made the following moves.

  • They acquired reliever, Lucas Simms from the Cincinnati Reds for Ovis Portes.

In addition, they designated lefthander, Brandon Walter for assignment.

In my opinion, the team still needs more relief pitching and a right-handed bat. Also, it would be great if they could acquire another starting pitcher.

Moreover, the countdown is on.

At the last minute; it was reported  Luis Garcia was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels.

Of course, I wish they made a big splash. So, time will tell how these moves work out.

Remainder of 2024 Season

The team won the World Series in 2018 and made the playoffs in 2021. In 2021, they defeated the Yankees in the Wild Card Game and then defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Division Series. Though they showed real promise in 2021; they ended up in last place in 2022 and 2023.

Indeed, this is a new year and like I said earlier; the team has been much better than most people expected. However, the question is how far will they go.

They are 56- 29 before tonight’s game. With 57 games remaining; there are still question marks.

Since the All-Star Game, the bullpen has crumbled. At the same time, the bullpens’ demise has led to several losses.

Now, that the 2024 Red Sox trade deadline has passed; will the Red Sox make the postseason?

Beyond 2024

Because the team signed Alex Cora to manage the team for the next three years; I think this bodes well for the future.

Due to a strong farm; the Red Sox are poised to be a great team for a long time.

Ultimately, I am excited to see how the young core develops.

As always, I welcome your comments on the 2024 Red Sox trade moves. Were you happy with the moves they made? Or, do you think they should have done more to improve?
