May is skin cancer prevention month. Since over 5 million cases are diagnosed in the United States each year, it is time for you to take action.
Skin Cancer Prevention Month
In the first place, it is essential to know your body from head to toe. But did you know you can see skin cancer? Well, if you didn’t know, you need to know how to detect moles and spots on your face and body.
So, Melanoma Monday is observed every year on the first Monday in May. This yearly date is to raise awareness about melanoma. At the same time, melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. Hence, it is essential to know the ABCDEs of melanoma. To learn more, visit my Melanoma Monday May 6th post.
Indeed, everyone needs to protect themselves against the harmful ultraviolet rays and radiation. So, the best way to protect yourself is to check your skin from head to toe monthly.
To conduct a thorough exam, you should do the following.
- Examine your face – this includes, lips, nose, and mouth. Additionally, make sure you examine the front and back of your ears.
- Check your hands – Look between your fingers. Also, check the front and back of your arms, forearms, and wrists.
- Inspect your scalp. Although it is hard to see each section, you may want to use a mirror or ask a family member to help you with this.
- Next, focus on the entire front of your body, including your chest, torso, and legs.
- Use a full-length mirror to examine your upper and lower back.
Skin Cancer Prevention – Detection
Skin cancer can vary in size and shape. If you see a change, you must contact a Dermatologist immediately.
Hence, changes can include the following.
- A spot’s color can be black, brown, tan, or multicolored, and it can also be pearly or translucent.
- Growth – an increase in size
- Spots that continue to itch, burn, bleed, or hurt.
- An open spot that doesn’t heal within a few weeks.
So, skin cancer prevention month shouldn’t only be in May; it should be part of your health routine.
Remember, your skin is your largest organ!
In my opinion, one of the most important things you can do is use a good sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Since there are many different brands and formulas, my recommendation is to choose one that has a broad-spectrum formula and is water-resistant. Also, I recommend you use an SPF of 40 or higher.
With so many choices, you may wonder what you should choose. But, don’t fret! My recommendations will help you keep your body, face, and neck protected.
