Huntington Theatre Bad Dates

Huntington Theatre Bad Dates

So this past weekend, my Hubby and I went to see Bad Dates at the Huntington Theatre in Boston. Because we love comedies; we were looking forward to seeing this show.

Mida Restaurant

Since we purchased tickets as part of a package; we started the night off with dinner at Mida. Our package included a three course meal and a glass of wine. As foodies, we’re always looking to try new restaurants.

Because I usually make my dinner reservation through Open Table; I received notification that my reservation was cancelled. Due to the promotion with the Huntington Theatre; they were unable to allow people to make reservation through this method. After speaking with the Manager, my reservation was confirmed.

Dinner consisted of a salad to share, an appetizer and we chose an entrée from a limited menu. Since I’m a fan of Spaghetti Carbonara, I ordered that as my entrée and my Husband had Sea Bass. My Husband enjoyed his entrée.  Because I make Spaghetti Carbonara often as well as have ordered it at various restaurants; this dish lacked flavor and had a lot of egg yolk in the pasta. The meal was finished off with Gelato.

Although the service was good and the prices were reasonable for the dinner/theatre package; I would not recommend Mida. From the minute, I arrived I had a strange response from one of the Managers. Although he later apologized, I wasn’t impressed.  In my opinion, there are a lot of great restaurants closer to the theatre for a much better meal.

Bad Dates at Huntington Theatre

In the first place, when I saw this advertised; I thought it would be a fun night with a lot of laughs. First and foremost, this play starts off with the audience learning Haley Walker is a single mother of a 13-year-old girl. At the same time, we learn more about her life as a restaurant manager. Consequently, we also learn that she has been working for the Romanian mafia.

In addition, this is a one-Woman play. With Haley’s performance; she definitely has the audience remembering some of their dating disasters.

As Haley decides to reenter the dating scene; we hear her stories of her bad dates. From one date to another, the story continues to evolve around her life.

Bad Dates Review

When we walked into the theatre; we saw a lone pair of Jimmy Choo shoes perched on a large cushion.

When the play opens, Haley Walker is in her bedroom surrounded by shoes. Since I’m a shoe lover; I was immediately excited. Visit my Shoe Obsession post to read more about my love of shoes. Indeed, my eyes were glued to her bedroom where shoes were featured everywhere.

In my opinion, I thought Haneefah Wood was wonderful as Haley Walker. As her portrayal of a single mother and her story telling; looking around, I saw the audience laughing quite a bit. Above all, the play was mainly about her dates.

When she receives a phone call from one of the Owners who has been let out of jail; the play takes a turn. The Owner has some questions about the books. Consequently, I felt this part of the play wasn’t needed. When she goes to the police department; she reconnects with a prior bad date. Strangely enough, she realizes this so-called bad date may have potential. So, that is how the play ends.

In essence, Bad Dates had some funny moments. But, it also had some parts of the play that fell flat.

As always, I welcome your comments.
