After the strike ended, the auto companies hired the workers back but at a lower pay rate. In 1935, the Wagner Act was created which permitted workers to join and organize labor unions. Also, General Motors did this as well. Consequently, workers lost out on not only their wages but put their lives at risk.
Since there wasn’t any work being done in the auto industry; the United Auto Workers known as the UAW became the bargaining agent for General Motors.
Indeed, the meaning of this day is not to forget the workers who fought for respect and job security.
