Delicious Chocolate Chip Day

Delicious Chocolate Chip

Delicious chocolate chip – Where would we be without this? Especially on May 15th, National Chocolate Chip Day.  It is hard to imagine where we would be without chocolate chips.

Of course, there is nothing like a delicious chocolate chip cookie.  Memories of growing up in my parents’ home and the smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies coming out of the oven bring me back to days of my youth.

Toll House Cookie History

In 1937, Ruth Graves Wakefield of Whitman, Massachusetts added a Nestle chocolate bar to a cookie recipe while working at the Toll House Inn.  The cookies became an overnight success and Ruth signed an agreement in 1939 to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging.  In agreement, Ruth received a lifetime supply of chocolate.  Hence Nestle named the Toll House cookie after the Inn.   Even if the story isn’t exactly true, it was a lot of fun to read about it.

Initially, a small chopping tool was included with the Nestle chocolate bars.  In 1941, Nestle and other companies started selling the chocolate in chip or morsel packages.  Originally, semi-sweet was the flavor of the chocolate chip. Although the flavors available today are:

  • Bittersweet
  • Semi-Sweet
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Milk Chocolate
  • White Chocolate
  • White and dark swirled
  • Mint
  • Peanut Butter
  • Butterscotch Chocolate Chips

A simple but delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe to try:  Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt.  Add your favorite chocolate chip flavor.  Drop dough by measuring a tablespoon full about two inches apart onto a cookie sheet.  Bake approximately 12-15 minutes.   Your cookie should have a golden color.

With so many people busy in their everyday lives, there are a lot of cookie dough options available for purchase.  This can easily be made into cookies or cookie bars.  Do you like to eat delicious chocolate chips out of the bag? I’m a fan of mixing milk chocolate and white chocolate morsels together to bake muffins, cookies, and other treats.  Another tip is to use milk chocolate or dark chocolate morsels with 1% milk to create a hot chocolate recipe.  What are some of your favorite chocolate chip recipes?
