How Post Pandemic Restaurant Landscape is Changing

Since Covid-19 has shutdown many businesses; let’s take a look at how the post pandemic restaurant landscape is changing and facing a new set of challenges. Not only are their concerns for both the diner and the restaurant; but also one of the major issues is safety. So, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of restaurants that have reopened.

Post Pandemic Restaurant Landscape

When Covid-19 forced restaurants to close across the globe; many closed their doors completely. However, now that restaurants have been able to reopen; what are they doing to change?

In the first place, many restaurants require guests to wear facemasks until they’re seated. At the same time, hosts and servers are wearing masks as well to protect the guests from spreading any germs. Once you’re seated; you can remove your mask.

As a foodie, I was excited to see restaurants reopen; and dine at some of my favorite restaurants as well as try some new restaurants.

With so many people working remotely; dine-in restaurants no longer have a lunch crowd. If you’re working from home; be sure to check out my Best Advice for Working from Home post.

And for dinner, I’ve personally experienced restaurants known for high-level service eliminating what they’re known for. In my opinion, what separates a bad, good and great restaurant is the level of service.

Post Pandemic Restaurant Landscape – New Restaurants

Prior to Covid-19, I had reservations to take my husband to Eddie V’s for a birthday dinner. Since the restaurant was closed, I had to make alternative plans and ordered takeout at a local seafood restaurant on his actual birthday.

When I received notification the restaurant was reopening; I made reservations to dine at the Burlington, Massachusetts location. Upon arriving, we were handed satin facemasks and told to put this on until we were brought to our table.

When plates are left on the table throughout the meal, no new silverware is brought out and entrees are delivered when you’re still eating your salad; there is a problem.

Since my hubby and I personally encountered this; I requested a manager. Unfortunately, the manager had no interest in our complaint; and didn’t even bother to remove the dishes on the table or address why the entrees were brought out prior to us finishing our salad.

In addition to this mishap, the server and staff never cleaned the table between courses.

With higher prices, you expect great food and perfect service. Although the food was good, the service was extremely disappointing.

After dining at this restaurant, I did write a review as well as phoned the corporate office on our terrible experience. Although the woman who I spoke to seemed very caring; she promised me a return phone call from the Director of Eddie V’s.

Sadly, they didn’t phone me back and obviously don’t care about their customers. Since then, I have read many more reviews of many others having similar experiences.

So, the bottom line is good food – bad service – high prices = 0 – skip this restaurant.

Recent Restaurant Experiences

In the last week, I have dined at both Davio’s for lunch and Bistro 5 for dinner. And, I have found both restaurants provided great service as well as delicious food.

At Davio’s, a friend and I met for lunch. With the perfect blend of ambiance and food, we both enjoyed our outing.

Although Bistro 5 may not look like much from the outside, I met another couple for reservations this past Saturday night. From the minute we sat down; we received attentive service and the food left 4 people very happy.

How will Restaurants Survive

With the impact on restaurants; what will they do to survive? Certain industries have seen growth. For instance, the pizza industry is booming.

So, how will the post pandemic restaurant landscape go back to normal? Well, that is the question. And, no one knows. Some well-known restaurants are struggling. With social distancing requirements; they will have to space diners 6 feet apart.

At the same time, restaurants have had to change their hours. With fewer hours being open; there are a lot of uncertainties. Will they return to normal hours?

Of course, many are wary. Restauranteurs need to do better and offer their customers a reason to dine out. They need to do what they can to ease their guests’ worries.

The food world is changing. As the delivery market expands; better restaurants will have to step up their game.

In summary, many restaurants will close their door. In our lifetime, we may not see a return to normal for quite some time. However, one thing we can be sure of is – there will be more food delivery options. Will luxury restaurants step up? Or, will we see new markets emerge?
