National Tweed Day History

On April 3, 1823, William Tweed was born. He was an American politician who was on various boards at many different companies. In addition, he served on the board of the United States House of Representatives and the Senate.

Moreover, he became the 3rd largest landowner in New York City; which was acquired through illegally obtained public funds. Hence, he was nicknamed the “Boss” in 1863.

Because of his fraudulent activities; he was eventually arrested. Whereas, there is a history of his arrests and prison time; he later escaped from prison and boarded a ship to Spain. Once again, he was arrested and returned to America where he returned to prison and died in 1878.

So, you may be asking yourself, “What does this have to do with tweed?” Since there are many theories floating around; perhaps it is because his name is associated with the date.
