Shopping Online

Shopping online has seen tremendous growth throughout the world.  More individuals, couples and families are shopping online using their computers, smartphones, and tablets.  Shopping in brick and mortar stores are becoming obsolete (See my retail stores closing post).

Online shopping is growing and is making up an important part of the retail market.  Several years ago, if you wanted to purchase a book, you would head to the bookstore.  Today – it is easier than ever to buy books.  Personally, one of my favorite devices I received as a gift several years ago was a Kindle.  With a kindle, you are able to shop online on Amazon and immediately download a book.  The best part of book-buying with a kindle is you can download a sample before deciding whether or not you want to purchase the book.

Is online shopping the way to go?

Consumers are embracing online shopping.  Is it easier?  Yes and no.  It is easier to purchase something you want with a few clicks.  The downside of this is receiving something that looks better in photographs than in person.  High shipping costs are associated with many purchases made online.  Many companies have begun offering free shipping, however, there are usually minimums associated with this.   How often do you spend more money than you planned on to take advantage of free shipping?   I personally have added items that I probably didn’t need or necessarily want just to take advantage of free shipping.

For me, the biggest downside is not seeing or touching the item I’m planning to purchase.  Often, when I have purchased clothing, shoes, or a handbag, I’ve ended up returning it due to quality, size or the item looked completely different than the photographic image.  Fashion is a touch and feel business.   Shopping at retailers enables me to check out various products, touch, and try items on.

Another pet peeve of mine is when I check out something online and see the ad following me wherever I go.  I’m constantly having to clear my internet browser cookies to avoid reminders of sites I have visited.

It is important for all retailers to have an online presence.  Keep your Customers interested in your product offerings.

Are you shopping online?  Do you find your buying more purchases online than in retail establishments?  What do you buy?  What do you like? Dislike?
