Dinner Party Conversation Starters

Dinner Party Conversation Starters

Today’s post is about dinner party conversation starters. So, this weekend you’re having friends over. Of course you have planned out your menu, and drinks. Now, you’re ready for your friends to arrive. Since you want everyone to have a great time, what are you doing to get the conversation flowing.

Dinner Party Conversation

In the first place, if everyone knows each other – great. But if there are a few friends who don’t know anyone, what should you do? Even if everyone knows each other, it is good to plan out something fun to keep the dinner lively.

How do you get the party started? When everyone has arrived, a great party idea is to create some adult dinner party games. Have a bowl with fun questions on a piece of paper. As each person arrives, have them pick a piece of paper. Also, you can leave a card at the dinner table. As each person picks up their card, they can engage in conversation or you can divide the party up as teams. Some fun questions to get the party started are:

  • What perfume or fragrance is your favorite
  • Ask someone the strangest thing they ever found
  • Do you have on any Designer item of clothing right now
  • What is the wildest thing you ever did

If you’re playing as teams, award points for everything someone has on the same team. In addition, subtract points if no one shared anything in common. Get creative and have fun.

Make sure you avoid any topics that make a guest uncomfortable, such as politics or religion. Of course, the purpose of a game is to loosen up. It is important to get everyone to feel comfortable and laugh.

So, you’re not playing a game. By the same token, start a conversation by asking some fun questions. With this in mind, ask:

  • What did you do last weekend?
  • Are you adventurous?
  • In addition, ask someone the funniest thing that ever happened to them.
  • Do you have any vacations planned?
  • What is on your bucket list? Since bucket lists are becoming a hot topic, this could open up into a conversation to last the entire night.
  • Who is your favorite person? This one is tricky as you don’t want to offend anyone – perhaps exclude relatives or a significant other.
  • If you were to hit the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?

Conclusion

To sum up, have a pot luck dinner party. When everyone brings something, that is sure to get the dinner party conversation going or have a cooking party. When everyone is making something or contributing, conversation is sure to flow.

As always, I would love to hear your comments on some of your favorite dinner party conversations?
