Mom and Pop Business Owners Day

This holiday was created by a son for a business his parents created in 1939 called Ruth’s. Ironically, this was a former client of mine in my prior business. Unfortunately, this shop permanently closed their doors in 1997.

First and foremost, Mom and Pop businesses are important. Not only are they an integral part of many cities and towns; but they are a key essential to the United States economy.

Whether it is an established family business or a new business; these businesses provide many unique products and services. To read more about the valuable services these small businesses bring; be sure to check out my Small Business Saturday November 25th post.

Mom and Pop

New businesses are important. However, some of these smaller stores face serious challenges. With so many big box retailers and bigger companies with larger budgets; these small businesses have to keep their finger on the pulse to take advantage of what their customers want.

In the first place, many of these small business have people available to answer their phone. You don’t run the risk of receiving an automated message like so many big companies. In addition, many of these smaller companies are more in tune with their products and services.

Business Growth Ideas

When you’re looking to bring your business to the next level; here are a few things you should do.

  1. Customer service is essential for any business to thrive. For instance, know your customers names. No doubt, everyone feels better when someone remembers their name. When businesses know their customers by name; they both develop a relationship.
  2. Be flexible. Find new ways to adopt to your customers needs. With larger companies, there is usually a lot of red tape to go through; but in a smaller company – you can make a decision quickly.
  3. Be part of the community. Whether your business is in a small town or big city, become part of things happening in the area.
  4. Of course, “Shop Local” is becoming a well known phrase. However, to get more customers, you have to think outside the box. Understand your customer. In any case, it is important to think of what is the next best thing to bring to your customer. Promote other businesses in your area and network to gain more business for both yourself and other small businesses in the area.
  5. Grow and Market your business. Since you may not have the necessary funds to advertise, try to create events and services that will keep your customers coming back. Above all, word of mouth is one of the best ways to acquire new customers.

In conclusion, show your support by shopping these small shops not only today, but everyday.

As always, I welcome your comments.

Happy National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day!
