Skeptical Female Shopper

Skeptical Female Shopper

Skeptical Female shopper is becoming the majority in their shopping habits at specialty stores and boutiques nationwide.  Department Stores, Specialty Stores, and Boutiques are facing declining retail sales regularly.

Many people talk about the weather when speaking about poor sales.    When I was running my Wholesale Sales Office,  a constant topic that myself and my Employee’s often heard from Store Owners/Buyers was their Customers were not buying coats or sweaters yet as it was too hot.  On days when the temperature was cold or we had snow on the ground, we would often hear Women aren’t shopping for Spring clothing.  In addition, when there is rain no one is shopping.

Consumer Boredom

Retailers are facing a tsunami of problems, however, no one is talking about customer boredom.  Many Store Chains, Malls, and independent specialty stores are not giving the Consumer a reason to shop.  Most people want to see different, fun, fashionable, and exciting merchandise.  Many individuals do a good amount of shopping online or in catalogs looking to find something unique or special.  Retailers have to stock and fill valuable square footage on their selling floor where an on-line site has more options where they can carry more variety but less quantity.  Customers need encouragement to shop.  Moreover, trendy retailers such as H & M, Forever 21, and Zara are carrying affordable, stylish, and disposable clothing.

Shoppers aren’t into you

A skeptical Female shopper is looking for something new or different.  Perhaps your merchandise selection has remained the same.  Consumers want to be enticed by something different.  Women’s business has been challenging for many retailers.  Fit,  Silhouettes, and colors of clothing haven’t connected with shoppers the way they had in the past.  If you’re a Store Owner or Buyer and want to win customers back – try changing your merchandise selection with new colors, new categories or designers, and more diversity enticing a new customer.  Of course, customers are becoming savvier with so many applications available on their Mobile devices.

Where are Women Shopping today?

In addition, many women are shopping online these days.  The stores they used to frequent regularly have failed to capture their attention.  Female Customers have become more elusive.  Many Industry Analysts believe the retailers are to blame.  Customers are sick of seeing the same selection carried on a regular basis.  Personally many female acquaintances I know well into their 70’s and 80’s are looking hipper and dressing youthful.  The Fashion Stores need to take risks in bringing these customers back into their store.    Furthermore, I’ve always felt that clothing is a touch and feel business.  In conclusion, let’s see better offerings at fashion stores and the skeptical female shopper will return.
