Portland Maine Weekend

Our Portland Maine Weekend

My husband and I planned a Portland, Maine Weekend to celebrate our 11 year Wedding Anniversary.   My husband had never been to Portland, Maine prior to this trip.   I’ve been to Portland many times for both business and pleasure over the last 25 years, so I was familiar with the city and looking forward to showing my Husband around.

Oxford Maine

We woke up early and headed to Oxford Casino in Oxford, Maine to start our weekend journey.  I enjoyed the drive and especially liked seeing a team of horses led across a street.

My husband and I have always enjoyed visiting Casino’s however, I usually don’t last too long as the smell of smoke usually gets to me.   Oxford Casino is 100% smoke free.   I’m able to sit down at a slot machine without smoke blowing in my face.  Penny slots are my favorite and they are in abundance throughout the Casino floor.  There are also other slots in various amounts, a video poker bar and game tables.   The Britney Spears machine was fun to play as every time a certain combination came up,  “Hit me one more time”.   The Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz are also favorite machines I like to play.  After a few hours, we made our way South for our Portland Maine Weekend.

Pomegrante Inn

Twenty years ago I stayed at the Pomegrante Inn and not much changed.  The Inn is artsy with a lot of fun art pieces throughout the entry and rooms.  A lot of the art throughout the parlor and guest rooms are produced by local Artists. The location is quaint and set in the historic district, a few minutes away from the heart of the city.

Each guest room has different colorful furnishing and art work.  We selected a King Size Bed prior to our stay and we were situated in the adjacent carriage house.

Also, the location, art, and the wonderful breakfast served daily was perfect.

Venturing into the heart of the City

As we headed into downtown Portland we saw docks, brick stones, and art galleries. The charm was displayed everywhere we turned.    Portland is a hip city with a young artistic vibe.  There is a huge district of galleries, theaters, gourmet popcorn shop featuring everything from Maine maple, salt, and vinegar (I bought) to White Chocolate Raspberry (my Husband bought – his favorite) to sea salt caramel, and traditional butter flavor.  Shops are everywhere you turn.  There was a sexuality boutique that had everything you could think of for a night of passion and romance.  We ventured into the Life is Good store and several other artsy boutiques.  Many of the streets have brick, stone as featured below.

Dining in Portland Maine

Food is plentiful in Portland.  Everything from James Beard award winning restaurants, craft beer pubs, pizzeria’s, seafood, to German restaurant – so many choices.  We chose Vignola Cinque Terre.  In addition, an Italian style cuisine that uses local ingredients in a loft style setting provides a cool vibe. Furthermore, one of the reasons we chose this restaurant was produced is grown exclusively for the restaurant from a farm in Greene, Maine.  The restaurant offered an eclectic menu that we learnt changes daily.

Goodbye – Portland Maine Weekend

We took in a lot throughout the weekend from exploring food shops, art shops, and sightseeing.  We met many locals who were friendly and seem to enjoy living in Portland, Maine.   In conclusion, on our way home, we went to the outlets in Kittery and had fun shopping.  Of course, we will return in the future.
