Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin Cancer Awareness month is this month. Since skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the United States; therefore, it is never too soon to practice safe sun. Luckily, if found early; this type of cancer is preventable. So, if you’re wondering; “How”? I’m about to let you know everything you need to know and how to check your skin. Let’s get started…

Skin Cancer Awareness Month

So, every year there are millions of cases in the United States alone. But, that doesn’t count for cases worldwide. Hence, it is important that you learn as much as you can about this type of disease; and take precautions to both detect and prevent it from occurring.

Although we cannot always prevent skin cancer from materializing; we can be aware of how to detect any type of mole or spot.

  • First, if you see a mole with 2 halves; this is a warning sign.
  • Second, if you have a mole or spot and it is uneven; you need to see a Dermatologist.
  • Third, different colors in a mole are a sign of melanoma.
  • Fourth – Although most small spots are usually benign; however, if you see a mole larger than a pencil tip, this is a sign that you need to see your Dermatologist.
  • Fifth – When a mole is itchy, bleeding, or growing; this should be taken seriously.

At the same time, the above are all signs of melanoma and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Sun Safety Tips

Indeed, it is never too soon to start practicing sun safety. At the same time, not only is ultraviolet rays dangerous; but it also causes skin cancer and premature aging. However, if you already have signs of aging; be sure to visit my Best Facial Wrinkle Treatment Options post for products that can help you rewind the aging process as well as treat fine lines and wrinkles.

Moreover, damage from the harsh ultraviolet rays can come from outdoor exposure while doing simple activities such as errands, i.e., going to the bank, shopping, and walking your dog.

So, my recommendations listed below will help protect you from too much sun exposure.

  • Avoid tanning booths and sun lamps.
  • Be sure to wear proper clothing such as a hat and UV blocking sunglasses.
  • Make sure you use an SPF 30 plus and reapply every 2 hours or after you have been in the water or sweating.  Be sure to apply a good amount of lotion to your body and face.
  • When you’re in the sun, try to find a shady area. Ultraviolet rays tend to be strongest between the hours of 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Finally, do your own skin check-up at home monthly and if you notice any changes; consult with a Dermatologist immediately. Also, be sure to see a dermatologist yearly for a skin exam.
