2025 Boston Celtics Season – Celtics v Knicks
Before this series started, I wrote a post about what to expect. To read about what the Sports Analysts predicted, visit my Celtics v Knicks Round 2 post.
Although the Celtics were expected to win this series and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, they were dominated by the Knicks. With Boston having the home court advantage, they lost the first 2 games of this series. In Game 3, the Celtics defeated the Knicks.
In Game 4, the Knicks defeated the Celtics, However, Jayson Tatum suffered a season-ending injury. Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon.
Now, the series returned to Boston. With the series on the line, the Celtics defeated the Knicks by 25 points. Since everything seemed to go Boston’s way, there was hope they would bounce back. But the Knicks dominated in Game 6 with a score of 119 – 81.
The Knicks won the series 4 – 2 and have advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2025.
Jayson Tatum’s Injury
When Jayson Tatum suffered an Achilles tendon injury in Game 4, the chances of the Celtics winning back-to-back championships diminished.
Indeed, Jayson Tatum’s injury is something the team will have to address moving forward. With Tatum expected to be out for the 2025 2026 season, a lot of questions remain.
2025 Boston Celtics Season Review
Though this team’s 2025 players were the same that won a championship the year before, this season appeared much different. To learn more about their run to the finals last year, check out my Celtics Won the NBA Championship post.
In my opinion, this team seemed to have serious issues from early in the season. For instance, there were many games the Celtics had a lead of 20 points at halftime, and they would end up losing the game. Unfortunately, this happened throughout the regular season.
Additionally, the team had a lot of talent. Even when Tatum didn’t play, the team had a 7.8 net rating. But, their M.O. was that they gave up big leads often and ended up losing many games time after time.
Of course, Jayson Tatum had a great season, averaging 26.8 points a game, 8.7 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Also, Jaylen Brown had a good year. Brown averaged 22.2 points a game, 5.8 rebounds, and 5 assists a game. Brown’s consistency made him an All-NBA and All-Defensive player.
Along with the two Js, Derrick White, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jrue Holiday, the team was considered to have one of the best starting 5s in the NBA.
Furthermore, Payton Pritchard emerged as the best 6th man in the NBA and won the 2025 NBA 6th Man of the Year Award.
Finally, Al Horford was consistent all year, and the other bench players were also consistent.
Also, Luke Kornet played a big role throughout the year.
In the playoffs, the team collapsed. Between injuries, Porzingis’s illness, blown leads and the ability to adapt, the 2025 Boston Celtics season ended with an ugly loss.
Boston Celtics Offseason
Now that the playoffs are in the rear-view mirror, it is time to look ahead.
The Celtics will face salary cap issues, which will most likely lead to roster changes.
Moreover, the team is expected to have a new owner. Bill Chisholm, co-founder of Symphony Technology Group who has agreed to purchase the Celtics for 6.1 billion. The deal is expected to be completed soon, and the NBA Governors will vote on it either in June or July.
Wyc Grousbeck will remain as the team’s Governor until 2027 and will step down in the 2027-2028 season.
In summary, the Celtics are expected to make a lot of changes. With Tatum expected to be out for the 2025 – 2026 season, the team has their work cut out for them.
Due to a high payroll, the team will have to make trades to avoid the luxury tax penalty. Will they trade Holiday and Porzingis? Additionally, they are expected to move Sam Hauser.
Will they focus on rebuilding and trading players for future draft picks for the 2026 – 2027 season?
Will the team contend next year and beyond?
Indeed, time will tell what will happen in the off season.
As always, I welcome your comments on the 2025 Boston Celtics Season. What do you think will happen moving forward?
