Betts Trade Update News 2020

Although the initial Betts Trade hit a few snags; the deal has been restructured and is back on. With Spring Training around the corner, it is nice to see a resolution.

Betts Trade Update

So, last week an initial deal was struck involving three teams. Be sure to visit my Red Sox Traded Mookie Betts post to read more on what the first deal was. With the Red Sox having concerns on the Minnesota Twins, Brusdar Bratol’s medical report; this deal fell apart.

After several days of going back and fourth with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins; a new deal was agreed upon on Sunday night.

In the new agreed upon deal, the Red Sox are trading both Mookie Betts, David Price and cash to cover part of Price’s remaining salary. In return, the Red Sox will receive 23 year old Outfielder, Alex Vergudo, Catcher, Connor Wong and Shortstop, Jeter Downs from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers and the Twins have worked out a separate deal. Furthermore, this new agreement needs to be completed without any further delay.

Betts and Price Trade Impact

In this new deal, 21 year old Downs will become the Red Sox top prospect. With Red Sox Nation unhappy with Betts being traded; will this deal be a win-win for the Sox?

Since there have been many questions for the last several seasons that the Red Sox wouldn’t be able to obtain Betts once he becomes a free agent; this deal gives the team an opportunity to get under the luxury tax threshold as well as replenish their farm system.

Of course, much of Red Sox Nation is dismayed; however, at the end of the day, the team became younger and has a chance to start anew. In my opinion, it didn’t seem likely that the Sox would be able to retain Betts; therefore I think this deal gives them the opportunity to create a new beginning.

Indeed, time will tell if this new trade works out for the Boston Red Sox.

As always, I welcome your comments on the Betts Trade.
