Red Sox Traded Mookie Betts 2020

Red Sox Traded Mookie Betts 2020

The Red Sox traded Mookie Betts. Although there has been speculation this off season that Betts would be traded; this shouldn’t come as a surprise to Red Sox Nation.

Boston Red Sox Off Season

First and foremost, this off season has had a lot of shake-ups in the MLB. With so many deals happening throughout the MLB; it was just a matter of time.

After winning the World Series in 2018, the team clearly disappointed many fans in 2019. Of course, it wasn’t because they didn’t win back-to-back. But, what was disappointing – was the team never seemed to click. Be sure to check out my 2019 Boston Red Sox Team Summary post to read about the issues that the team faced in 2019.

So, after the team dismissed Dave Dombrowski; the team hired Chaim Bloom as head of Baseball Operations. With Bloom, the team acquired someone who comes from the same alma mater as Theo Epstein. In addition, Bloom is considered, one of the most well respected and well liked individuals in the world of baseball.

Now, with Chaim Bloom in charge; the Sox have made their biggest splash of the off-season. With the chatter growing in the last several weeks; it wasn’t a surprise to see Betts traded.

In fact, for the last several months as well as prior years; there was a strong probability that the team wouldn’t be able to retain Betts.

Also, David Price was included in this trade. In my opinion, Price wasn’t a good fit for the team. From the start, he was involved in an altercation with Dennis Eckersley.

Moreover, the Red Sox will receive from the Los Angeles Dodgers, 23 year old left handed hitter, Alex Verdugo. Verdugo hit 294 in 106 games prior to a back injury. Although, his conditioning has been questionable; there is an uptick in this deal. His skills could provide a promising replacement for Betts.

In addition to Verdugo, the Sox acquired from the Minnesota Twins – the No. #83 MLB rated prospect, Brusdar Bratrol. At the same time, Graterol is considered to be a hard throwing right handed pitcher with velocity of 102 mph. Also, he may be an effective reliever, which is something the team needs desperately.

Did the Red Sox Make the Right Deal

Of course, Red Sox Nation may be disappointed. However, they shouldn’t be. Chances were strong that the team wouldn’t be able to sign Betts next season and by trading him; they have acquired not only a possible replacement but have cut payroll and will be under the luxury tax threshold.

With Betts entering his walk year, chances are he would have left. At the end of the day, chances are Betts will test free agency after the 2020 season.

So, the question everyone has – is did the Red Sox make the right deal? Indeed, time will tell if this was the right deal or not.

As always, I welcome your comments.
