Mama Mia Review August 2018

Mama Mia Review August 2018

Since I loved the movie, “Mama Mia”, my Husband surprised me with tickets to see the show this past weekend at the North Shore Music Theatre.

Mama Mia

Because Meryl Streep and other members of the cast made the movie such a big hit; I was looking forward to seeing a variation of this turned into a play. Since the movie led to a play being made, could the fun of the movie be transformed into a performance?

First and foremost, many of us grew up with the music from Abba. Clearly, the music brought a smile to our faces and had many of us singing along. So, the plot is about Donna and her daughter, Sophie, (Amanda Seyfried in the movie) who is about to get married at the age of 20.

Because Sophie doesn’t know who her father is; she invites three Men she read about in her Mom’s diary to her wedding. Surprisingly, all three men show up. And, the plot is about who is her dad and how they all ended up being in Greece.

Mama Mia Review

Although I’ve seen many shows throughout the years at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, this show didn’t hit the mark for me. Most of all, in the movie; the audience was treated to the picturesque Greek Island. In my opinion, the scenery for the performance left a lot of empty space and was lacking in design.

Moreover, the performers lacked chemistry. In addition, many of the cast members didn’t seem to be in sync throughout the performance. If you’re a fan of Abba, you will enjoy some of the songs. Personally, I found some of the songs off-key. At the same time, I’m not sure if this was due to the acoustics or the performer, but found many of the songs disappointing to say the least.

Overall, I found the play never hit the mark of the fun and chemistry from the movie. In summary, I would recommend you skip this play. If you’re in the mood for Mama Mia, revisit the movie. Or, you can see the sequel, “Here we go Again”.

As always, I welcome your comments.
