National Hot Cocoa Day December 13th

National Hot Cocoa Day December 13th

National Hot Cocoa Day is today. When it comes to colder temperatures, there is nothing better than this tasty warm beverage.

National Hot Cocoa Day

So, each year on December 13th people across the country pour themselves this delicious cold weather drink. Are you wondering where cocoa comes from? Surprisingly, monkeys were the first ones to discover the cacao plant and learn it was edible.

Consequently, the flavour can be different depending on where the trees are grown. In fact, most grocery stores sell packets of hot cocoa. So, all you have to do is heat up water or milk and voila – you’re cocoa will be ready in a jiffy.

However, the best news is for those of you who are watching your diet; hot cocoa has very little calories and fat.

Did you know there are health benefits to drinking hot cocoa? Because cocoa contains antioxidants, they help prevent cancer. In addition, cocoa beans help those with digestive issues. As far back as the 19th century, hot chocolate was used as medicine to treat stomach diseases.

Celebrate National Hot Cocoa Day

Whether you’re entertaining today or anytime this month, your family and friends will enjoy this treat.

Typically, the best way to make this is to mix the cocoa powder with either hot milk or water.

In my opinion, the best way to make this is to use either hot water or 1% or 2% milk. Also, if you’re lactose intolerant, you can use lactose-free milk. And, also there is organic milk.

To celebrate this cozy beverage, there are different versions you can make. Since I’m not a fan of buying packets of cocoa powder; I wanted to share a fun way to make this beverage.

In a small saucepan, combine a high-quality cocoa (I have even used semi-sweet morsels), either milk or water and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Stir on medium to medium-high for a few minutes. Remove from pan and pour into a mug. Add either marshmallows or homemade whipped cream for the best homemade hot cocoa.

As always, I welcome your comments.

Happy National Hot Cocoa Day!
