Re-Gift Holiday Etiquette Guide

To re-gift or not. So, it happens every year. Since many of us receive a gift that we cannot use or want, we try to return it back to the store. If you don’t know what store the gift came from, you may try to re-gift it.

Due to someone going out of their way to purchase a gift, what can you do if you really dislike the gift. If you don’t want to hurt someone’s feeling, the best thing to do is thank the gift giver.

Re-Gift or Re-Giving

Re-gift and re-giving became popular by an episode on Seinfeld. This episode was shown January 19, 1995 and was known as The Label Maker. Because of that episode, the term became more popular.

National Re-Gifting Day is a holiday the Thursday before Christmas in offices. As of October 2005, Colorado’s Governor declared National Re-Gifting Day an official proclamation. In addition, it is a made-up holiday in the United States.

Re-Gift Etiquette

When you receive a gift, say thank you. Whether you like the gift or not, appreciate the thought and time of the person who bought you a gift. What is the best way to deal with a gift or item that you don’t want or need? If you are not going to use the gift and cannot return it, the following etiquette applies.

  • The gift has original tags or instructions.
  • You think someone else would really appreciate this gift.
  • Also, you don’t believe the person took the time in selecting the gift.
  • If you receive duplicates of an item.
  • You don’t want the person who gave the gift to you to find out you re-gifted their gift.
  • Moreover, it is important that the person isn’t in the same circle as the person who gave you the gift.

Conclusion

Of course we have all exchanged gifts with a friend and received something we didn’t like. Also, you can stop exchanging gifts going forward with this individual. In addition, suggest doing an activity that you will both enjoy versus exchanging presents.

  • Theater – There may be a show playing that you both want to see.
  • Travel – Plan a mini-vacation.
  • Dinner – Of course, everyone enjoys a nice meal.
  • Spa – Since most of us like to get a beauty or skin treatment, plan a day at the spa with your friend.

Since there are many things to do going forward that don’t require a physical gift, there won’t be any need to re-gift.

In fact, there is a company that offers a service to get rid of gifts you don’t want. OfferUp is a website and set of Android and IOS apps. Furthermore, it gives you the opportunity to take a photo and write a description of the gift you don’t want. Remember a gift you don’t like may turn out to be on another person’s wish list.
