2022 Red Sox Trade Transactions

The 2022 Red Sox trade transactions started right before the Sox were slated to play the Houston Astros yesterday. When this season began, I had concerns and wrote about them before opening day. Check out my Red Sox Open their 2022 Season Today post. In the off-season, I was surprised there wasn’t an upgrade in the team’s pitching.

2022 Red Sox Trade Transactions

In my opinion, it wasn’t a surprise this team has been off since the season started.

When the season was underway; I immediately didn’t understand this year’s team. Since I have been following the team since I was a young girl; I have a good handle on baseball.

Right from the get-go; I didn’t relate to this year’s team. Check out The 2022 Red Sox Team has no Identity post to read more about what went wrong from the beginning of the season.

After a few months of the season; it was the first time in a long time I didn’t watch the majority of games.

2022 Red Sox Trade Transactions – Christian Vazquez

Right before the team was set to play the Houston Astros; Christian Vazquez moved across the diamond. But, what I didn’t understand is why Christian finished going through the hitters’ meeting before the game. Of course, that made no sense!

Though Vazquez has been a bright spot for the team; this team most likely won’t make it into the playoffs. So, they had no choice but to try and trade one of their better players and get something in return.

In return, the team has acquired two prospects from the Astros. So, they picked up infielder/outfielder Emmanuel Valez and outfielder, Wilyer Abreau who are ranked No. 29 and 30 according to the MLB Pipeline in the Houston farm system.

Other 2022 Red Sox Trade Transactions

Last night, the team traded reliever, Jake Diekman to the White Sox for catcher, Reese McGuire.

Since Vazquez has been traded; Kevin Plawecki will be the starting catcher. And, Reese McGuire will be the backup catcher.

Also, the Red Sox acquired Tommy Pham from the Cincinnati Reds for a player to be named later or cash consideration in return. Because Bloom has familiarity with Pham when he played for the Tampa Bay Rays; Pham contributed to the Rays. Will he be a difference maker?

Another surprise was on Tuesday afternoon; they acquired 1B Eric Hosmer with 2 prospects and cash in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect, Jay Groome.

Of course, this trade was a big surprise.

Hosmer wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause to go to the Washington Nationals as part of the Juan Soto trade. Now, the team may finally have a good first baseman.

2022 Red Sox Trade Transactions Report Card

In my opinion, I am unsure of the value of the trades they have made so far. For instance, Vazquez has been playing at a high level all year so will the players they received turn out to be a good transaction?

Though Chaim Bloom said the puzzle was incomplete yesterday; I question some of these moves.

So, what happened?

Personally, I thought J.D. Martinez would be traded as well as Bobby Dalbec. And, the team didn’t pick up any pitchers. At the same time, I’m questioning if Chaim Bloom is the right fit for the Red Sox. However, the word is the team didn’t get offered anything in return for some of the players Bloom hoped to move.

So, I give the team a D.

Moreover, the Red Sox are a big market team; and Bloom should be taking a different approach.

How will the team do for the rest of the Season?

Though the postseason has expanded to 12 teams; I don’t see this team making the playoffs. Furthermore, if they do squeeze by; I don’t see the team going far.

In essence, the Red Sox put themselves in the position early due to their lackluster beginning to their season and losing 19 games in July when they won 20 games in June.

In summary, it is too early to see how the remainder of the season goes. However, I don’t have hope for this year’s team.

As always, I welcome your comments on your thoughts on the 2022 Red Sox transactions.
