Italy Vacation Recap 2026

Italy Vacation Recap 2026

Though my Italy vacation is behind me, here’s a recap of my trip. We started our vacation in Milan and continued to Venice before returning to Milan.

Before I left for my trip, I shared my Travel Sabbatical and Career Break with you.

Keep scrolling for a recap of my Italian experience.

When we landed in Milan, our vacation started. Once we picked up our luggage, we headed to our hotel – the Magna parfum.

Since this hotel is considered luxurious, we chose to stay there to begin our trip. The hotel was built on the site of a former perfume factory. For example, each room has a specific scent. On our last night, I visited the perfume lab and purchased a bottle.

The rooms are fairly large compared to most hotels in Italy. However, the bathrooms lacked adequate shower space.

Italy Vacation Recap – Milan

Our first full day kicked off with an excursion to the Dumo. So, the Dumo is located within walking distance of many cafes and shops. Hence, the Duomo is one of the largest churches in the world.

Although I enjoyed the rooftop terrace, I didn’t enjoy the narrow, steep stairs down.

On our 3rd day in Milan, we had an excursion to Lake Como, Bellagio, and Lugano.

Moreover, it is no surprise that this was my husband’s and my favorite part of our trip. Combined with the gorgeous Alpine views and the scenic lakes, it made for a breathtaking day.

On our final day in Milan, we spent the day exploring, shopping, and having lunch. At the same time, we could see the chefs cutting and rolling the pasta right through the window.

Italy Vacation Recap – Venice

When we left Milan, we headed from the bustling city to the floating city of Venice.

Upon arriving at the train station, we headed to the Venice Times. Although the 1st room we were given was too small, the staff moved us to a much larger one. The location was spot-on.

We were able to get to the ferry in minutes. And, the street is lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants. With a few-minute walk, we were able to sample many creamy gelatos and talk with many of the shop owners.

From our hotel, the hotel manager arranged a private tour of the Murano glass factory. The water taxi offered an exhilarating, fast ride during which we could see glassblowing techniques firsthand.

On Murano Island, there are many shops selling affordable blown-glass sculptures and jewelry. Of course, I did some shopping!

Since we didn’t schedule an organized tour of the Doge’s Palace, we purchased skip-the-line tickets.

Indeed, this was a fun way to visit the different levels at our own pace. We explored the opulent rooms, the scenery, and the historic prison.

Also, we spent a few days in San Marco Square.

So, the last time I was in San Marco, it was leisurely. Now, it is elbow-to-elbow crowds.

Also, the Grand Canal restaurant is a “Must” for front-row seats to the canals. The restaurant has an old-fashioned vibe with white tablecloths and formal service.

Food & Shopping in Milan & Venice

Meanwhile, if you are expecting the food to be unbelievable, that isn’t the case. Since this was my third time vacationing in Italy, I still find its cuisine subpar. However, we were lucky to stumble upon Quadrino in Venice. Both food and service were amazing. The tiramisu was prepared tableside. Luckily, the server let us video the preparations, so I will definitely be making this at home.

Also, on our last night in Venice, I was lucky to stumble upon a pasta dish with a creamy pistachio sauce, where I was able to get the recipe. I already made this recipe and brought back a taste of Italy to my kitchen.

Though Milan is famous for its fashion, I wasn’t impressed.

In Venice and Murano, I was able to purchase a  few unique items. However, both cities have many luxury stores rather than more unique shops.

Italy Vacation Recap – Conclusion

Because there is a 6-hour time difference between where I live and Italy, it took me several days for my body clock and rhythm to get back on track. But now that I’m back, I have beautiful photos and memories of Italy.

Additionally, I will be planning an island getaway for later in the year.

As always, I welcome your comments on my Italy Vacation.
