Everything you Need to Know About Cervical Health Awareness

Since cervical health issues are on the rise; this month is Cervical Health Awareness Month. First and foremost, deaths from this type of cancer are increasing.

Cervical Health Awareness Month

So, January is designated as Cervical Health Awareness Month by the United States Congress. Although many think of cervical issues as a silent disease; it is highly preventable with vaccinations and screening tests. By and large, any woman who has sexual intercourse is at risk.

In the same way, The American Cancer Society is active in helping Women get tested for cervical cancer. If a woman is diagnosed; they offer to help you understand your diagnosis and how to get the treatment you need. In addition, they are active in their fight to find new ways to prevent and treat cervical cancer.

Cervical Cancer

Consequently, more women die of cervical cancer each and every year. As one of the most common causes of cancer for Women; the rates are dropping due to the screening tests available. In the first place, a screening test can find any changes in your cervix before cancer develops. Moreover, even if the cancer has already started to show and hasn’t spread; it is easier to treat from a medical perspective.

Cervical Cancer Guideline

The American Cancer Society recommends all Women begin cancer tests at the age of 21. Additionally, women who are 21 – 29 should have a Pap test every three years. At age 30, a Pap test with an HPV test should be done every 5 years.

If you’re at high risk or exposed to DES in utero, you may need to be screened more often. For instance, if you had an organ transplant or have been on a steroid for a long time; you will need to be screened more often.

For any Woman who has had a hysterectomy; you no longer need a Pap or HPV test.

Of course, when found early; you have the chance to be successful in treatment. Like anything, early detection is the key.

As always, I welcome your comments.
