Melanoma Monday May 6th

Melanoma Monday is today. First and foremost, the importance of this day is to raise awareness of skin cancer. Now is the perfect time to take steps to protect your health.

Melanoma Monday

In the first place, it is important to schedule an appointment with your Dermatologist. And, if you don’t have a good Dermatologist, ask your Primary Care Physician for a referral. Since I personally had a scare with melanoma several years ago; I think it is imperative to have your skin checked annually.

At the same time, melanoma is deadly. Presently, it accounts for approximately 75% of skin care health problems. With the staggering number of skin care issues; you cannot afford to ignore any mole.

Melanoma – See Spot – Check Spot

First, if you see something unusual on your skin; you can take steps to stop it from spreading. Indeed, we all know the alphabet. The ABCDE’s of Melanoma are what Dermatologists use for skin exams.

  • A is used for asymmetry. So, if you have an irregular mole, it is important your see a doctor right away.
  • B is if you see a border. For instance, if you see an uneven mole or a spot with an edge, you should see a doctor right away.
  • C is for color. Do you have a mole in various shades of color on your skin? If you see, red, brown or purple, there is reason for concern.
  • D is the diameter of the mole. Because melanoma measures approximately 1/4 inch or more; you need to seek medical assistance if you have something of this size or larger.
  • E is for a mole that has changed in color, size and shape. When you notice any change on any spot on your skin; it is important to see a Dermatologist immediately.

Of course, the key to any type of medical issue is to not delay. The key to melanoma is the minute you see or spot a change; early detection can insure successful treatment. However, when something has metastasized, unfortunately there are not a lot of options.

In the last several years, more people are dying of this type of cancer. So, take control of your health and don’t delay in scheduling a skin examination.

Skin Care Protection

Since most melanoma skin cancer has to do with exposure to the sun; it is imperative to use an SPF 15 or higher as part of your everyday regime.

Whenever you’re buying something to protect your skin from UVA/UVB; make sure it has the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal.

From Sun Bum, this sunscreen protects you from UVA/UVB rays. Not only has this product been tested and approved by the Skin Cancer Foundation; but it also provides your skin with Vitamin E. Although this product is more expensive than other brands; it is worth it – it smells great and lasts for a while.
