Senior Citizens Day August 21st

Senior Citizens Day August 21st

When Ronald Reagan was President, he declared August 21, 1988 to be the first National Senior Citizens Day. By the same token, President Reagan was instrumental in creating National Ice Cream Month, he also wanted to give Seniors a day of happiness. In the same way, this day is to honor and show support to our senior citizens.

Celebrate Senior Citizens Day

Because we all know someone older, spend the day by showing them appreciation and love. If you have a relative or friend in a Nursing home, make plans to visit them today. Although many family members may live in a Retirement home community, today is a good day to spend with them.

It is important to celebrate today with them. Also, plan some things not only today but throughout the year. Hence, a few great ideas to celebrate the day with them are:

  • Plan a family get-together.
  • Organize a Summer picnic.
  • Take them to the movies.
  • You can also bring them a DVD or VCR tape of their favorite movie.
  • Take them on a walk to the beach or a park.
  • Also, organize a barbecue.
  • Take them shopping.
  • In addition, make them breakfast.
  • Or, treat them to a special meal or dessert.
  • In addition, you can play a game or organize a game day.
  • Share some old photo’s or scrapbooks.

How to Spend National Senior Citizens Day

So, every year many Senior Centers throughout the United States host special events today. Since many of us have have our elders play a part in our lives; use today as a day to thank them. After all, many senior citizens have given up a lot to show us unconditional love.

By showing our appreciation for all they have done in our life, we are bringing a smile to their face. Of course, many older adults have been instrumental in our success and helped guide us in making us the person we are today.

Conclusion

To sum up, National Senior Citizens Day gives us the chance to celebrate the day with our older relatives and friends. If you don’t have any Senior relatives near by or alive, you can still do something today. You can still share a smile with someone elderly.

Because many senior citizens are taken advantage of, you can become an advocate for senior rights.

Since we’re all getting older each year, let’s offer empathy, and understanding to seniors everywhere.

As always, I welcome your comments.

Happy Senior Citizens Day!
