National Barbecue Month

National Barbecue Month

National Barbecue Month is May.  May is in full bloom with perfect weather and longer days and a perfect month to celebrate the National Barbecue Month. My Mother-in-law bought my Husband and I an indoor George Foreman Grill many years ago.  I use the indoor grill for vegetables, potatoes, sausage, hotdogs and lettuce.  I love a grilled Caesar salad and there is something special about grilled romaine with white anchovies and a homemade Caesar dressing.

With the windows wide open, there is something intoxicating about the smell of barbecue. It definitely has my mouth watering and my Husband is a Master at the grill.  He makes some delicious meats, fish, hotdogs, sausage and potatoes. Once baseball season kicks in, I start craving grilled hotdogs with a grilled roll – a  favorite of mine in the Summer months.

Whether you prefer conventional or organic meats, fruits and vegetables, National Barbecue month is a great month to experiment with some of your favorite foods.  Cooking outdoors gets you out of the house and usually gets you to eat healthier food.  Many adults find it easier to lose weight by barbecuing as there are a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and other options available.  In fact, you won’t have to add oil and butter, reducing calories.

Gadgets for barbecue use

  • Tongs
  • Spatula
  • Brush
  • Skewers
  • Rubs
  • Marinades

Make sure you have a basket nearby. A mesh basket is perfect when grilling small food items like shrimp or vegetables to avoid from slipping into the flames.

Many prefer barbequing rather than going out to dinner. By and large cook-outs are great for family occasions, Memorial Day Holiday, other holidays and being outdoors. With this in mind, May is a great month to celebrate National Barbeque Month.

Ways to celebrate National Barbecue Month

  • Organize a pot luck – a fun way to interact, have some food and enjoy.
  • Think about vegetables – I love barbecued zucchini, summer squash, tomato, eggplant and corn.
  • Use less dishes – less clean up.  Paper goods are an option.
  • Try new Barbeque recipes.
  • S’mores – a delicious end to the meal.

Happy National Barbecue Month!
