Therapeutic Recreation Week July 8 – 14

Since 1984, Therapeutic Recreation Week has been celebrated. So, today’s post will let you know everything you need to know about programs and services that can help improve your health.

Therapeutic Recreation Week

In the first place, this week was implemented by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society. First and foremost, this was established to improve the health of those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Not only can this help those with disabilities; but also anyone who is recovering from a physical ailment or accident.

In fact, this week is an opportunity to let others know ways this can help them.

Recreation

No doubt, recreation improves your overall health. By taking part in physical activities, you’re improving your physical wellness. Of course, leisurely activities will lower your stress and improve your health. Improve the quality of your life by the following:

  • Art
  • Dance
  • Games
  • Hike
  • Performing art such as music or theater
  • Singing
  • Swimming
  • Walk

Of course, we all cope better when we’re participating in some type of activity.

Celebrate Therapeutic Recreation Week

Indeed, this week is important to focus on the importance of therapeutic recreation. Clearly, if you or anyone you know has any type of physical, mental or emotional disability; now is the time to get involved in some type of activity.

When you exercise, your body will respond. In light of the heat, visit my Summer Best Fitness Suggestions post. If you are looking to avoid the heat, try exercising indoors.

Or, find a swimming pool as aqua therapy is great for flexibility and improving your balance. Moreover, most insurance providers cover aqua therapy. Aqua therapy helps the following conditions:

  • Arthritis
  • Autism
  • Balance issues
  • Bursitis
  • Also, any type of chronic pain or joint issues
  • Knee or hip replacement surgery
  • Lower back pain
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Tendonitis
  • Stress

Volunteer

Of course, you can volunteer at a senior center. You can organize a picnic, softball game or a walk. If you work in an office building; organize a sporting event.

In addition, volunteer your time for a children’s program. For example, art, music or reading are a few ideas. For anyone who has a disability; organize a volleyball tournament or any type of sports event. Volunteer for the Special Olympics.

For anyone with a disability, your assistance can help them enhance their motor skills.

In essence, volunteering your time helps bring joy to someone else’s life.

As always, I welcome your comments.
