Women's Equality Day - August 26th

Women’s Equality Day – August 26th

Women’s Equality Day is today! So, are you ready to celebrate the importance of this day? In fact, it is important to remember the hurdles women have overcome and how we can continue to move forward.

Women’s Equality Day – How it Started

On August 26th, this day is a reminder of the obstacles overcome by heroic women who have faced discrimination, and violence and worked to make progress for women.

In the early 19th century, women in the United States weren’t able to make as much money as a man. Also, there were the same jobs available to women as there were to men.

Furthermore, women couldn’t inherit property.

However, in the early 1900s, Finland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom began legalizing voting for women. At the same time, this movement continued to sweep the entire world.

Though the United States tried to introduce the 19th Amendment in 1878, it failed to gain traction. After World War 1; the number of women who suffered finally gained the support it needed.

At that time, women’s groups came together to point out the pretense of fighting for democracy in Europe while not approving it for American citizens at home. Due to this, the Constitutional Amendment was modified to support equal rights.

As a reminder of the struggles of the past, present, and future; Congress selected August 26th as Women’s Equality Day in 1971.

Though it isn’t always easy to remember to thank the women in our lives; today is a reminder to show your appreciation to all of the women in your life.

Show your gratitude!
